Our trip to South Africa was an experience that none of us expected. At the start of traveling here, I had no expectations of what South Africa could be like. Of course, I have seen a few pictures online, in films, and I did little research. However, arriving there, all my assumptions had completely changed.

The biggest thing I didn’t expect was how relaxing and calm it was. The scenery that was outside was so beautiful and breathtaking I could stare at the views all day. The mountains were absolutely gorgeous and as well as the wildlife.

The animals were so unrestricted and so carefree mostly due to the space they had unlike a zoo. The creatures there were also so interesting to see especially because of how you don’t see them on a daily basis back in America. Other than the views and animals, the people there were also very kind. Every time we needed help for directions, they were very willing to help.
During our visit, with the help of our friends and in partnership with Tshisusu Foundation, my family and I volunteered at Rekopane Inclusive Development Centre, a school for disabled kids aging from young kids to teenagers.
This will not have been possible without the help of Monique Du Toit, who went out of her way to organize this event with her peers. We also wouldn't be able to accomplish this mission without the coordination of our friends, Francois and Angie Du Toit. We truly appreciate everything they have done to make this event happen.

When we met them in the Centre, everyone greeted us when we came in and they were so sweet, kind and very welcoming.

The kids being cared for in the Centre have Cerebral Palsy, anxiety, autism and other disorders. Some were in wheelchairs and others had different beds and tools to help them.
The school had different classrooms each dedicated for a different purpose. One classroom was used for learning the subjects and another was used to help kids with movement for those who can't move certain parts of the body. There was a kitchen and there was even a backyard to play in.
We gave out food (KFC which is considered a luxury for these kids), beanies, gloves, and blankets for the kids and staff to keep them warm during the cold. When we gave these things out, seeing the joy on their faces was a special moment in this experience.
To express their happiness, they sang a song for all of us. Singing is one of their favorite things to do as they are able to express themselves through their songs. Like what the staff said, "Music is the universal language." This was my favorite moment. The harmonizing of voices mixed with glee made a song filled with joy.
Overall, our trip to South Africa was a wonderful experience and it was gorgeous. From the magnificent views, the wide variety of animals to the people we were able to meet and serve, South Africa has been a unique and memorable journey.
